Safety glasses provide protection against impact, chemical or molten metal splashes, dust or radiations from welding arcs of lasers. It may be in the form of spectacles, goggles, visors, face shields or hoods. Good safety glasses are made from polycarbonate material that are shatter resistant. Their purpose is to protect the wearer from injury from accidental projectiles and particles.

Most safety glasses also provide a high level of UV protection and therefore, can be used as sunglasses. They are commonly made of Polycarbonate frames / temples, Polycarbonate lenses, Removable PC inner rim for Rx, Soft touch nose pads and Rubber temple pads.

It is necessary that they meet the standards applicable for a region. For example, in USA "ANSI Z 87" should be marked on the frame and the manufacturer's initials and any special lens attribute should be noted on the lens.
